Dr. Terrence Barrow, an authority and accomplished author on South Pacific cultural items, identified this piece as an Asmat bowl. This gallery concurs with that appraisal and believes it to be a late 19th century work. This bowl is in very good condition. There is a superficial crack on the underside which does not go all the way through. It also has a carving on either side of confronting snakes.
