Chinese carving of the Bodhisattva Guan Yin, probably carved from zelkova wood. It was originally lacquer covered and painted. Since the Chinese carve in solid blocks of wood, this was originally carved from a large branch of a tree. The inside of the branch and the backside of the figure have cracked and separated free, leaving a large hollow space in the back which is not significant. It is a nice carving, probably done in the early 19th century.
