Mt. Fuji & the Artist's Sketchbook by Albert Melville Graves

Mt. Fuji & the Artist's Sketchbook by Albert Melville Graves

Rarely do we get a visual travelogue to go along with a painting!  In the heart of our gallery, a tiny yet resplendent masterpiece awaits the discerning eye: "Mt. Fuji" by Albert Melville Graves (1862-1950), a gem of an oil painting that whispers tales of distant lands and artistic journeys.

This exquisite piece, measuring merely 5-1/2" by 7-1/2", wears its original frame, making it overall framed 9-1/4" x 11-1/4. A vibrantly colored window to a bygone era when travel was full of dirt and dust, far from the conveniences we have now.  Painted by American artist Albert Melville Graves (1862-1950), this is not just a visual delight but a historical treasure, as it is accompanied by the original sketchbook that Graves carried with him during his extensive travels through Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and Cairo.

The back of the painting holds a secret - inscribed with the words "Painted in Japan, 1924", it invites us to step back into a moment in time, where Graves, amidst his global explorations, paused to immortalize the serene beauty of Mt. Fuji.
