Item #7306: Jade Clasp
Item #7306: Jade Clasp
This 18th-19th century nephrite jade clasp is made in 2 parts. One part would have been sewn on each side of the opening of a garment, such as a cloak or robe. The tongue sticking out from one side is inserted in the hole in the other piece in order that it may close the garment. It is a beautiful bat shape with a coin design for the head of the tongue. The bat is a symbol for happiness and the floral shapes or vining around it are simply decorative devices.
