Hakusan Daigongen is a Shinto deity that holds protective powers. Hakusan is a mountain range in Ishikawa Prefecture near Kanazawa. The mountains were said to be sacred and the Shugendo faith there goes back as far as the 7th C. Hakusan Daigongen is a conglomeration of figures all with deep religious meaning. Here the mixture of Fudoo Myoo (Buddhist deity) and Tengu (Bird-man) is depicted riding the Oinari (Shinto fox) This item is from the Cleveland Museum Collection and carries the sticker and inventory number from that museum.
