Meiji Period (1868-1912) portable writing set. When men or merchants were out and about transacting business, they found it necessary to have some form of writing instrument. This is a very cleverly made device, called a yatate (portable writing set). The long shaft carries a small brush, and the oval chambered device which is linked but swivels on the long shaft, has a cover. Small pieces and threads of silk were inserted into the chamber, and powdered sumi for the writing material that the Japanese used was mixed among those threads. When the individual wanted to write something he would place just a little bit of water into the chamber, dip his brush into that, and he would automatically have ink that he could use to write with. It is a very early and well designed device similar to what later became the fountain pen.
